Tara Made Me Do It!

Yes, after drooling over her projects from last week, I begged her to make this “Monday Made It” thing a linky from now on….and she listened. (To lots of people who suggested it.)

So, then I was stuck.

With having to complete a project.

Ahhhhhhhhh!

Luckily, I had brought a few things home with me to do based on some pins I had pinned.
The first one is from Maria at Kinder-Craze and the second one is from Stacy at Going Nutty!:

So, I took these ideas and used them to help me “Jazz Up” my pencil and paper organizer.

I have communal pencils and paper in my room.  I know that some of you are like, geesh…control freak.

Yep, that’s me.

I bought out Staples last year and still have 3 gallon-sized bags full
of pencils, so this communal thing will go on for at least another year.

So, I have this container to house lined paper, graph paper and pencils.  It’s similar to this picture except it was a periwinkle blue:

Now, I love periwinkle, but that won’t go with my new color scheme of black, lime green, hot pink and teal blue, right? 

Anyway…here’s a picture play-by-play (I forgot to take a picture of it before I primed it with white primer):

Now for the drawers:

I liked the polka dots on Maria’s drawers and the ease of using Mod Podge from Mrs. Squirrel’s drawers.

(OK, I like these girls’ drawers…something’s wrong with that sentence.)

So this is what I decided to do:


See that extra paper off the top?  Well, once it was dry, I needed to trim it with an Exacto knife.  Did I have one? NO!

So I proceeded to trim it with scissors.  Mistake.

So, then, I had to use mailing tape to tape down the edges (almost defeats the purpose of the Mod Podge…but oh well…at least it won’t slip and slide.)

Once I finished those, I created labels for the drawers…no more pulling all of the drawers out until you find the pencil drawer!

Those labels, by the way, are my next project….everything in my room will be labeled like that. (Maybe even the kids!)

Now that the project is complete, I just have to find a way to hide this from my husband:

But then again, I just tell him Tara made me do it.  (He won’t know what in the world I’m talking about and will walk away stupefied.)

Brilliant idea!

  1. These are so great!And I can completely understand the spray paint dilemma! I spray painted some stools dark blue and our backyard looked like a Smurf murder scene for a while (oops!!)But the end result is so cute, it's all worth it :)~Stephanie3rd Grade Thoughts

Tell hubby the paint will grow out of the grass….how I know 2 reasons, a) did the same thing(still on gravel in driveway year later) b) we did the huge twister game on the grass for field day, and yard guy said it has mostly mowed off, next round will do it:) Love your makeover….thanks for sharing!

  18. Ok, I admit it, I'm may have to do this. These are TOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!! Question, how “good” does the paint say on the plastic? Does it look like it will scratch off easily? This is my one fear. Love it and I may totally copy it in my colors! I will make sure to give credit where credit is due!Mandyhttp://mandys-tips-4-teachers.blogspot.com/

  20. Mandy, I painted a bunch of drawers like this two years in a row. Why 2 years? The first year I did not use primer and the paint peeled and picked off. Then last year I redid them with primer (and new colors) and they still look great! I'm ready to make them over again with this tutorial, but first I need to get into my locked classroom and get them home! Maybe I can bribe a custodian with some ice cream to let me back in the room?SophiaHow Cute Is This!

  21. Yes, agreed. The key is the primer. I've also read somewhere to sand between coats of primer. That may be even better, but I haven't sanded any of mine. See my more recent post and it shows the primer I used.
